1959 JD 440IC Steering Problems

Hello all, I bought a 440IC with a 831 High Lift over the weekend. It barely steers left, and the right lever does nothing. I can see in the holes where there used to be plugs, the right lever seems to be missing a spring. (could this be the problem or is it just a return spring?) I have ordered a service manual and I am waiting arrival. Meanwhile I need to know what the steering clutch system consists of, and what parts I may be needing before I can tear in to it. Also are there multiple steering clutches (like a motorcycle), or a single clutch and pressure plate on each side? All comments appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Well after I spent a little time looking around I found the following problems: Right Side: No brakes at all, it looks like the brake band on the right side is hanging loose. The clutch barely disengages. What apears to be the throw out bearing when pressed against the pressure plate to disengage the clutch moves sideways as if it is missing the fingers on the pressure plate, or the fingers are worn off. The adjuster on the clutch is stuck so I can't tighten it at all. I have no springs at all on this side. Left Side: Steers left ok but the clutch starts disengaging after the stick is pulled over half way back and the brake doesn't tighten up until the lever is all the way back. I have adjusted the clutch as much as possible. I will adjust the brake tighter on this side tonight. It seems there are about 3 springs missing on this side. I need a diagram or an exploded view of these areas. If anyone can scan one, I would appreciate it. I am preparing to "go in" to the finals and clean all this mess up! I have an issue I also need to solve. I use a friends garage and he thinks the crawler will break his concrete floor. (normal 4" slab). I know this tractor only puts about 3 or 4 p.s.i. on the floor, and maybe even less if I put it on 2x12's. Any info I can tell him may ease his mind. Please leave comments and Thanks in advance.

Gary, Sounds like the RH lever is either disconnected or somethig has broken. Also, if the crawler has been sitting for a while, or outside, the steering clutches will absorb moisture and swell up. If you need parts, we have all of the steering clutch parts new. Lavoy

Good luck on the clutches, I hear that is "routine maint". My Dad's estate has one with similar problems, and I was wondering what you paid and what condition it is in overall. I think guys here also have manuals or will send you a few applicable pages.

It's a 1959 model with a hi-lift. It's in decent condition overall, the pads are worn, the undercaraige is great, it needs paint and a bunch of little stuff. I paid $3000 for it.

Hi Gary, The 440 has a multi disk clutch pack with fibre and steel plates and an automotive type pressure plate. The steering lever should have about 1" free travel prior to releasing the clutch and then 2 or 3 inches prior to the lever stop it applies the steering brake. The steering brake is a band type around the outside of the clutch drum/housing. Sounds like the left brake may be out of adjustment or worn out. The right plates may be stuck togather or the linkage is so far out of adjustment it is not release the pressure plate. They are not that hard to adjust but any replacement of parts requires removing the final drive housing. Good luck and email or post any more questions.
