My new engine rebuild suffered a blown head gasket between the middle cylinders after only 32 hours on the engine. I think the rebuilders did not draw down the head bolts properly but I wonder if anyone else has input on this. The deck on the head is straight and the rebuild was a full one with new everything. I checked the torque as I took the head off and some of the center haed bolts were only about 45 lbs instead of 95. The machine shop said this was because the gasket was blown ??. I don't buy it. It didn't let water into the oil, which was good. Anyway I put another one in tonight and torqued it down properly to 95 lbs. I plan to run it for an hour and then retorque as my manual suggests, but that will be a pain. What do you guys think- am I overthinking this thing? rick in west texas.

nope...definately needs retorquing...yes is a pain...with the center headbolts that loose,it sounds like they either didn't retorque or didn't torque properly to begin with(more likely)...kinda makes you wonder what else they may have forgotten...

Don't be too hard on the rebuilders without knowing the full details. If they simply rebuilt the engine, and the operator/repair manual clearly states that the head should be re-torqued after running, then who should have done it before 32 hours were put on the engine???? Regards, RAB

I take the blame for not retorqueing the first time. I asked the rebuilder what tio do and he said it wasn't needed. mea culpa. The rebuilder also put a sleave the wrong size on the front pulley which caused the seal to fail, as it wouldn't even go over the sleave without popping out the spring lining. . If they had told me I would have bought another pulley, just like all the other new parts. rick roberts

You need a new rebuilder.

Was the liner protrusion height checked? Memory is .001 to 005 but check the book for the actual dimension. Permatex gasket spray with copper does help with sealing somewhat out of true block to head mating surfaces.
