Thanks for the info from you guys before. I have a '56 D4 cat 6u series that came with no pony motor. I have since found a core motor which essentially consists of the block, heads and manifold. The pistons and valves are in good shape. The motor basically needs everything else. Carburetor, air cleaner, magneto...etc. Is there any where I can still find these parts or am I out of luck? Thanks in advance for any help.

Shane I have a running pony on a D4 5T that runs good (or it did almost a year ago before the head was removed from the diesel). I had it sarting on one or two pulls it also has electric start on the pony but the gear/pully is bad that engages the starter. No one wants the whole machine so I will sell the pony separate. I am in upstate new york. mlp @superior.net

Shane -- Oh boy! Well, first let me ask why the poor old girl lost her pony -- did someone try to go direct electric or was it just removed and never re-installed? Of course, if she set exposed for a while, you'll probably want to look very carefully at the diesel flywheel compartment and pony clutch/pinion cmpt. to make sure everything isn't an underwater mess. Barring that -- the carbs aren't too bad -- they're Zenith and come available from time to time. Depending on the core you have they're a couple to choose from, if memory serves. Mags are usually a difficutly. As far as I know they're a no-go with Cat, and most that come available are in bad shape or are pricey. Parts can be had for most from Standard Magneto of Chicago, or perhaps locally if you have a really good mag shop around. You'll probably wind up having to get a core and rebuild it top to bottom. How about the governor? Linkages? Sorry, I can give you D6 part numbers, etc. but don't have much on the D4 s. Option II -- IF you're in a warm climate, and IF you don't mind non-original equipment, a direct electric conversion would almost certainly be cheaper. I would post your parts & info requests not only here but also at ACMOC (www.acmoc.org) Good luck; hope this helps a little. Pete

Pete, Well, I don't really know how she lost her pony;I guess it just went bad and some one didn't want to mess with fixing it. Someone did take care to make sure everything was protected though. They installed a homemade plate over the flywheel housing complete with a water return and all. The dozer runs fine, the man I got it from was pull starting it with his truck. I don't want to have to have two people to start the dang thing when I want to do a little work around my place. As far as electric start, I have been looking into it but I would have to machine the holes in the housing and i'm looking at all my options at this point to see what my best bet is.
