I have overhauled a 1010 diesel crawler - it starts great, but when under a load it spews black smoke even under the lightest loads. Any idea's where I went wrong? Maybe the injection pump needs overhauling? I'll listen to any advise. Thanks, Roger

Just a thought but black smoke is too much fuel or not enough air. Is there a rag left in the manifold from the overhaul or some other air restriction?

Roger, Have run a couple different 1010's and they both smoked quite a bit under load, but neither were fresh engines. Did you rebuild the injector pump? Is it timed correctly, and/or is the smoke screw cranked in a little too far? lavoy

the injector pump should be able to be turned to advance or retard the injector pump. its much like timing a distributer on a battery ignition. they way i do it is to make slight changes in the timeing and try it to see how it performes. its mostlikeley that its ratarded some causeing it to smoke. Im sure there is a way to perfectly time a injector pump with the proper equipment but i have had much success with the above.

Turning the pump affects the initial (static) timing. The injector pump has an automatic advance system analogous to a spark-ignition distributor. Fuel advance timing is adjusted externally with the engine running. A plastic window is installed on the pump temporarily to check the advance degrees. So, checking both the static and advance timing is not difficult. If your machine is pushing black smoke under a light load, it's probably over-fueled. This too can be adjusted without taking the pump apart, with an Allen wrench.
