A month or so back, I was working the dozer and lost all fuel pressure. I got it started back up and out of the mess I was in, luckily. I replaced the pressure releif valve, the rubber on the old one was hard and had few bad places, I replaced the fuel filter, drained the settling bowl, cleaned the screen filter out in the setting bowl (it was full of trash), probably hadn't been cleaned in years. Don't really know as I recently purchased this machine, while I had the fuel transfer pump off, I blew it out good, no visible trash. As of yesterday (08/18/2003) After I'd replaced the fuel pressure release valve, my fuel pressure was adequate, not where I thought it should be, but it was running ok. I ran it another 20-30 hours or so, seemed to run ok, but the fuel pressure wasn't up as high as it should have been, it was just about 3/4 way up on the pressure guage. After setting a few weeks, I cranked it back up yesterday evening, and after about 5 minutes, I lost all fuel pressure again. What a pain. I took the transfer pump off again, the pressure relief valve seemed to be fine, it wasn't stuck or anything, there is a plug that holds the pressure relief valve in, and there is another plug that if taken out, U can see the pressure relief vale. I took the plug out and closee off the holes in the front of the pump and U can blow air thru it, pretty easily, I guess the pump is worn out, but it doesn't make sense that it would just stop like that, since it's a mechanical pump. I don't really know, I'd like to try a different pump on it, but they are pretty expensive. The local CAT dealer says they can test the pump, but I don't know if they just check the release valve or actually check the pressure the pump is putting out. I took off the fuel filter, and with cranking from the starter, fuel just trickles out when cranking. I'd think that it should be shooting out pretty good from the pump, but that's not the case. I've got fuel to the pump, release valve seems to be fine, but no pressure coming out of the pump, it seems like it would have to be the pump in that case, but it doesn't make sense that it just stopped all of the sudden. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, other than a case of beer an not worrying about it.

Assuming you have good fuel flow from the tank (all that trash and gunk you cleaned out of the strainer had to come from the tank) call 1-800-824-2164 and check their price on a transfer pump.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the sediment bowl again last night, and it had some more trash in it, which tells me there is excessive trash in the tank. The transfer pump shouldn't just stop like that, so I'd guess the trash is blocking the fuel flow in the line. I blew it out last night as best I could, and I'm going to try and get it cranked up and to the house so I can clean the tank, blow out all the lines, filters, etc. with a compressor, see if that solves the problem before a new pump. Regardless of the pump, there shouldn't be trash in the tank and or lines. Thanks for the comments.

if your machine has screens in the injectors like the 3304 in a d4d they should be cleaned.i've experienced similair problems in a similair machine from these clogging but am not compenant to advise you abouy an unfamiliar machine. on the 3304 injector the nozzle is finger tightened and the nut on the precombustion chamber is 80 ft. lbs, ask a mechanic who has experience with your machine about this. great luck, don
