Read the posting about adjusting steering clutch plates pressure with the JD7 gauge. Is this really necessary? I have to replace a steering clutch pressure plate and would like to know if I have to get one or can I just install the pressure plate as is. Thanks.

It's good to have the gauge but I have set plenty of them with a tape measure.

You are right about setting them with a tape measure, but my factory books don't give that measurement in them anywhere. I made a JD7 tool out of a piece of flat aluminum after calling a guy on this board that told me the correct measurement. He said go 3/4 of an inch above the brake drum with the pressure plate fingers. It just looked like it would be easier to me to have the tool because I couldn't lay a straight edge across the drum because the pressure plate sticks up to high. I made the tool while the factory tool was being shipped and it is just as good as the one I paid for, however, when I ordered it I had no idea what the measurement was. Gatractorman, how do you measure the finger height setting with a tape measure? Do you put spacers on the drum and then lay a straight edge across to make your measurement or do you measure up from the pressure plate frame itself?

Your right that none of the books give you a measurement because they want you to buy the tool, I just measure from the splined hub up to the top of the pressure plate fingers where they would contact the T.O. bearing, cant recall the measurement off top of my head but can get it for you tomorrow if you need it.

If you could find that measurement, would you post it so I can write it down in my manuals. I agree with you about Deere wanting you to buy the tool. I have run into some other similar things with our Deere tractors that are like that.

I finally got to the shop yesterday, been laid up with a twisted ankle, anyway 1.5" is what I have been using measure from the highest point on the inner hub where the axles go thru to the top of pressure plate fingers where they would contact the throwout bearing.

After putting a pressure plate, new discs, brake band, and throw out bearing in my 350 this year, I pulled it out the door and it slipped. I had not adjusted the three fingers on the pressure plate. I got the JD7 gauge, tore it down again, and set the pressure plate and it worked fine. Do what you want but I would have given a bunch more than that gauge cost to have been able to skip the second tear down. I have put in several tractor clutches and automotive clutches and none of them I dealt with had adjustments for finger height on the pressure plate. The steering clutch pressure plate is different and you need to set it exactly like the book says..... ..... .unless you prefer to learn this the way I did.

You can do whatever you feel like doing...It won't affect my life any...I don't really think that the "recommendation" by John Deere to adjust the level of the clutch fingers and doing so by using a JD-7 gauge was a huge marketing ploy, intended to sell thousands of these tools . Just slap that new pressure plate in there...maybe it will work correctly.....maybe it won't...
