I am a full-time snowcat operator/groomer at a ski area in the winter. I am interested in buying a Bobcat or the like with a back hoe attachment like the 911 or 607?. I have no experience with this machine. I am thinking about buying a used on for some part time excavating work in the summer months when I am not working the ski area. Looking for ideas/opinions/advice on a newbie getting started small time into this business. Thanks.

Derek: While a Bobcat (or "skid-steer loader" if you want to avoid the Tradmark Police) is a very handy machine, you may want to look at a mini-excavator. There's lots of these floating around for about the same money as a Bobcat, and they will dig circles around a Bobcat. An acquaintance who runs an excavating business just traded up to a Komatsu mini-excavator to replace his Gehl skid-steer with a front-mounted backhoe--he says there's no comparison. I own a NH L455 skid-steer, and they're an excellent machine in their place, but if your excavating plans include any reasonably major digging, the mini-excavator is the way to go.

In my opinion a backhoe attachment on a Bobcat is just right next to useless, they do beat a shovel somewhat tho', I suppose it would depend on what and where you plan to dig, you dont have much reach with the hoe attachment and it makes it near impossible to get in and out of the Bobcat (well for me anyway 6'6" & 300 lbs.), it will be a bigger investment but buy the Bobcat then look at a mini-excavator for your digging purposes.
