CAT D2 Questions

I am looking at buying a D2. I have owned numerous tractors over the years, but never owned a crawler. I plan to use it to clear fence rows, push down small trees and grub stumps as well as small grading projects like filling small ditches around the farm. Will the D2 be able to handle these jobs? I would also like to know what the major maintenance items are on a crawler like this. It has a rope start pony motor and diesel engine. Are the engines reliable and durable? Thanks for any replies!

I suggest that you find someone with crawler experience to look at the tracks. What looks O.K. to you may be on the very edge of coming off the idlers or sprockets. The pony motor on our 1944 D4 was always easy to start, not a problem. The D2 is not a real powerhouse for dozing; we used the HD7 for dozing, but then we had BIG rocks and BIG trees to doze.

I am a newbie myself. Since you haven't gotten any replies, here's my 2 cents: I have a D4 which runs very well. Being a fairly good mechanic I was able to determine that before I bought it. But BEWARE of undercarriage. This is not so easily assessed if you've never had one of these. You have to know what to look for or you could end up spending upwards to $5000. on undercarriage. I was lucky and bought from an honest individual. Things like "rollers, rails, idlers, sprockets, pins & bushings" were greek to me. Mine has plenty enough life left for my small farm. Bushings are not worn through quite yet. Bushings (around the track pins) seem to be the general indicator there are other problems. So check them before you buy.. reach up and feel them. Also pointed sprockets (they push the against the pins). If this stuff is bad do more homework before you buy. And.. use the Dozer very slowly and gently while you learn the art of operating one of these cockeyed beasts. Good luck!
