Cat D4D steering clutch press

Took steering clutch assembly to Cat dealer to have it pressed back onto the bevel gear shaft. My Cat book says it needs to have 15-20 tons of press. The "kid" at the dealer says all they do it tighten the lock nut so they don't split the hub. I have .140 from clutch inner drum to bevel gear shaft. Book says .90 to .150 is OK. It took me a 50 ton port-a-power to disassemble. Is the "kid" right or should I go to another dealer? This is a heck of a lot of work to not get it right the first time!

Tom, I would have to say that the person who told you that you only need to tighten up the nut is wrong. Caterpillar engineers who designed this component state in their service manual that you need to press the hubs on to between 15 and 20 Tons. If they felt you only needed to tighten up the nut then we would stated this in the manual. If you do not press them on there is a strong possibility that in time the hubs will come loose and start to work on the splines. You know what happens now you wear the splines out and you have to install new parts. I would recommend that you call the dealer and ask to talk to the service manger and see if this is their policy and if he says yeas ask him if his service warranty will cover a redo should the hubs come loose.

I agree with you just getting to the steering clutches is a lot of work. I have a 7U D4 and used a 6ft. cheater on a 1" drive socket and tightened it as much as I could. As far as the beveled shaft, if the steering clutch extends beyond the shaft end it can be ground of so the nut doesn't bottom out. My Cat book say 15 to 20 tons too. Ask your question at ACMOC.org a lot of good people will help you.
