reverser trouble

Hello, I own a 1968 JD400 loader with reverser which has been very reliable through the years with a few problems which were easily fixed. The other day I used the tractor for the majority of the day removing stumps, grading land, digging etc. It worked great but then this morning i get in it and find that I can not drive forward, but still have full power in reverse. I seem to receive oil pressure to the reverser but do not have a gauge that fits the valve access to determine exact pressure. I was wondering if anyone has ran into this problem before and knew a way of correcty diagnosing the problem. I own the manual but not sure what to look for. I would appreciate any ideas, thoughts or suggestions as to what the problem may be. Thank you

If it were a low pressure problem the symptoms should be present in forward and reverse...sometimes the clutch linkage gets bent doing the work you described...But if you are sure you have good drive power in reverse , but not in forward, the usual culprit is that the sealing rings and/or the collar they ride in that seal the path of oil to the forward clutch pack are worn...This usually appears gradually though..but anythings possible...Double check all the clutch pedal linkage and reverser lever linkage for bent rods or loose or "almost missing" roll pins at the linkage connection points...Maybe a gauge and fittings purchase may be in order. To access the forward clutch pack and seals, the tractor has to be split.

Thanks Jonathan, I greatly appreciate the help because with the tractor being brocken im at a standstill on my current landscaping project. I rigged up a gauge to the pressure valve and found that the pressure was there when in reversere but it zeroed out in forward. Is the roll pin you talk of on the outside of the reverser? On the clutch linkage i noticed a part of the pin has brocken but a small peice remains that seems to do the job. I took the back cover off the reverser and the linkages seem to operate. I found 80 lbs of pressure when in reverse. Should I try to increase the pressure with shims? All and all i probably will have to get inside the clutch. Being inexperienced on splitting the tracotr, what does this involve? Thanks again, Dan

The pressure sounds a bit low....I want to say it should be in the 150 psi area...but I'd have to check on that...The clutch linkage is usualy all thats needed to alter the pressure setting...shimming it usually only masks an underlying problem. There should be some test ports on top of the reverser control valve. One for forward...one for reverse..Replace that roll pin that looks out of place...Usually its the linkage on that hollow cross shaft that runs across and under the reverser. When you depress the clutch pedal to the stop , all you are actually doing is dumping the engagement pressure in the reverser...when you feel the throw out bearing near the floor board, then you are actually releasing the pressure plate on the engine clutch...hope that helps a little...it still sounds like there maybe internal leakage in forward , but the pressure has dropped to a point where it is evident in forward and not reverse...
