I have a JCB 3C Mk2 which is having problems with the hydraulics when I raise the front or drive up a slope. It seems that the pump is not getting oil even though it is filled as full as possible. Filling is very slow.

I dont know if this will help, but I had the same problem. It appeared that the reservior was full because it would not take any more oil, and when I poured more oil in it, I had to do it slowly and wait for it to go down. I thought it was full several times but I still had problems on hills and when I tried to load it on a trailer. After looking over the system I found that the reservior where I filled it(just above the filter) actually sat lower than where the line coming out of the filter emptied into the reservior. To remedy the problem I got a piece of radiator hose that was about 18 inches long and sat well above the outlet. (this piece of hose is just used for filling purposes and should be replaced with whatever cap you use before operating) I clamped the extended hose to the inlet on the reservior and put my funnel in the top of that hose. This allows the fluid to flow freely into the reservior. I was amazed at how many gallons of oil I was able to put into the system, and it fixed the problem. I still have to do this to this day, I dont know why its that way. I hope this works for you, let me know.

Sounds as if the suction strainer in the hydraulic tank is blocked,I am not referring to the main hydraulic filter, look under the tank and you will find a plate, drain the oil and remove the plate, inside you will find the suction strainer, remove and clean it,see how you go from there. Good luck AJ

When I read your post again I seen the bit about slow filling,on the 3C when you fill in the hydraulic oil it has to go through the main hydraulic filter and it can be very slow to fill esp if the filter is a bit dirty, have a look at where you fill the oil,on the filter housing top you will see facing you a big plug,I think it is two and a quarter AF,undo it,take out the spring behind it and put the plug back loose, with the filler plug in start the engine and stop it again this will have pushed the filter bypass valve off its seat and the oil will pour in without going through the filter, fill the tank to the correct level and put the spring back tighten the plug, put the filler plug back,do not run the engine with the filler plug out as it will let the oil out.I was taking it for granted that you had the oil up to the mark in the other post, but it will have done no harm to have cleaned the strainer as a lot of people don't know there is one.
