Can anyone give me information on an Avery crawler. It is similar to a Cletrac HG---but not identical. The sheet metal (hood and radiator cover) are Avery. The undercarriage looks identical to an HG. There appears to be a difference in the differential housing and the battery is set off to the right side of the frame. The seat is also very different. It says Avery on the hood and Ro-Track on the track frame covers. What model is it? When were they built? Did Cletrac or Avery build them? Also does anyone know how to contact the Avery Collators group--I found a site, but no email or other means to contact anyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated---I am a Cletrac guy but this has stirred a bit of interest in me.

A few year ago I was at an Avery Show that was in conjunction with the national Avery Club, They Had an Avery crawler there and they had the orignal advertising liturature there also. At that Show they had an Avery only tractor pull that was interesting.

YOUR CRAWLER MAY BE SOME KIND OF A HYBRID OR CUSTOM. THE CLETRAC HG IS BASICALLY A CLETRAC GENERAL GG TRACTOR WITH TRACKS ATTACHED. THE ENGINE, SHEET METAL ETC. ARE THE SAME. AVERY PURCHASED THE CLETRAC GENERAL GG AND IT BECAME THE AVERY MODEL A IN 1943. THE AVERY A WAS IDENTICAL TO THE GENERAL GG, OTHER THAN THE COLOR CHANGED TO AVERY RED. IN 1945 AVERY CHANGED THE SHEETMETAL ON THE AVERY A TO THE SAME AS THE CRAWLER YOU SEE AT THE AVERY WEB SITE. THAT TRACTOR IS PROBABLY A HOMEMADE HYBRID AS OTHER THAN THE SHEET METAL IT IS THE SAME AS A CLETRAC HG. IN SHORT THE CLETRAC GENERAL AND HG, AVERY A, WARDS TWIN ROW AND THE MINN MOE BF AND BG ARE ALL BASICALLY THE SAME TRACTOR WITH COSMETIC AND MECHANICAL UPGRADES BUILT BY THREE DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS!!! HOPE I HAVE NOT CONFUSED TO TOO MUCH!!!! FROM WHAT I KNOW, AVERY NEVER BUILT A CRAWLER AS OLIVER PURCHASED THE CRAWLER LINE,BUT ANY AVERY SHEET METAL WOULD FIT AN HG. TOM

Dave, I haven't heard of an Avery crawler, but have noticed that the sheet metal of the Avery R is identical to the oc-3 that I have, as well as the clutch. There are other similarities that lead me to believe it would be very easy to build a hybrid. There is also a Minneapolis- Moline model tractor that uses some of the same components. I have wondered about building one myself using the Avery transmission. Could this be such a hybrid?

Hi, Dave. If my memory serves me right, there is ONE photo in the HCEA galleries that has an Avery crawler in it. It is one of several machines in the photo but closer to the camera in the lower right corner of the photo. And you're right. It is very similar to a wide Cletrac HG 68. Blake Malkamaki at cletrac.org may be able to help. You can e-mail him from the site. Hope this helps. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I have a 951B trac loader - when you select foward 1,2 or 3 it won't move. It will try to move in 3rd. Very good in reverse. what should I check? Fluid is full and clean.

Hi, Fred. If reverse is behaving normally in all 3 gears, my guess would be that something has happened to the 'forward' clutch pack in the transmission. A powershift transmssion is simply a set of clutch packs, in this case two direction packs and 3 speed packs, that are connected to constantly meshed gears and are hydraulically engaged by moving the selector lever to select a direction clutch and a speed clutch. Pull your trans oil filter out, cut it open, and have a look at it. If there is anything more than just a faint showing of metal and/or other material, you can be fairly sure that something has gone wrong inside the transmission. There is a faint possibility that it may be simply adjustment. Whether due to wear or incorrect set-up or somebody bending the linkage somehow, the control lever may not be moving the forward/reverse selector far enough in the forward direction. To check this, remove the floor plates and find the forward/reverse selector linkage under the floor. Check for any slack or restricted movement in the linkage. Lock the parking brake and place ALL raised equipment on the ground. Start the engine and, at LOW IDLE, move the control lever to reverse 1 and listen to the engine for any change as the load comes on. Now move the control lever to forward 1 paying attention to which way the linkage moves as you move the control lever. If there is no corresponding note change from the engine, manually try to move the linkage under the floor just a little further to see if it engages the forward clutch pack. If there is still no engine note change, you are very likely looking at taking the transmission out. Consult your local Cat dealer or friendly local EXPERIENCED heavy equipment fitter/repairman. Have them check transmission pressures. This will usually give a better indication of where the trouble lies. Hope this helps. You have a wonderful day (In spite of this problem.) Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks Deas--I posted this question over at Clectrac.org originally. Blake is not aware of an Avery crawler. I did see a picture of one at the Avery site--but no information--it is being hauled in a parade on a trailer. Unfortunately that site offers no way to contact anyone and has no forum.

The HG with Avery tin you see on the Avery web sight is an HG Crawler that one of the Avery Club members pieced together, and painted red. I believe he has sold it, and it is floating around out there in the midwest somewhere. I Don't know if the one on e-bay is the same one, but I don't think so. I would tend to think it is something some one has created. You can e-mail the editor of the Avery club newsletter at averycow@yahoo.com .
