I currently own a JCB 1700B that doesn't go into forward or reverse now. It would go into forward for a while but never reverse. I know its low on fluid but can't find out what type of fluid it needs from the only dealer in town so I can top it off. Can someone tell me if its a type of Dexron II as it is red? Dealer wants over $50 for a 5 gallon bucket and between $400 and $500 for manuals for this model. Are there any other North America dealers around or where I can get used parts from. Stan

I also have a JCB 1700 series backhoe. Just pulled the transmission this weekend because I had reverse but not forward. I took apart the shuttle and found that the belelville spring had shattered.I had earlier thought the friction discs had worn out. Like the earlier Greg had mentioned it is a Borg Warner Velvet shuttle and similar to Case. I found ahelpful parts break down on this site which sells Case parts. Link I do not have any info on the oil because I haven't got to that point yet. Greg L.

Hi Stan,I am in the UK, the JCB's are badged different here and I don't know what your machine is,if I had the year, engine, manual or electric forward/reverse I might be able to advise you,the oil we use here is JCB's as it is cheaper to buy from them than anywhere else,I believe it is Shell.your dealer seems to be charging over the top.I often used the ordinary ATF,one way or the other the box must have the correct amount of oil in it,if you have the electric change check the wiring, the F/R switches fail often, get some one in the cab while you go underneath, put your hand on the control valve on top of the box and with the key on get the other person to move the F/R switch,if it working you will feel the plunger jump in the solenoid,if not you have an electrical problem. You don`t say where you are at, but I seriously doubt you will find any used parts for your transmission unless you stumble across a machine someone is willing to part out. The oil is red, but it is NOT either Dexron or any other type of ATF for that matter. JCB claims any ATF is not compatible with the clutches and will damage the friction plates. You may be able to send the mil-spec number to your local oil supplier and match it, your call if it works, fine, if it doesn`t, well. You are correct, JCB is VERY proud of their manuals. If you want just transmission specs, call your local dealer and see what info they will get for you. The older machines with a shuttle box in them I believe was a Borg-Warner if I remember right, same as Case used for their shuttle trans set up. Parts for that are interchangeable with Case parts, but the trans is JCB. Good Luck!!!!!
