580SE brake adjustment?

I'm looking at a used 580SE and the brakes work (on the paved level apron) but both go to the deck and the right barely returns on it's own. The seller says "they just need adjustment - any idiot can do it" [ but he hasn't done it;) ]. I peeked under and didn't see anything obvious to adjust, but I was unable to get really dirty that day. Any wisdom out there?

My 580SE has the mastercylinders connected to the hydraulic system so you cant put the wrong fluid in but the earlier ones were seperate but still ONLY use hydraulic fluid. I have the service manual and would be happey to scan and email the pages to you but first you need to know the tractor serial # and the transaxle serial # as there were differences. Hope this Helps Terrance

Thanks for the replies. I found an identical unit that had good brakes (and the charging system worked, and the engine covers were still there and the bucket float linkage was there and the seller wasn't so sleezy) and bought it instead (for less)!

Adjusting those brakes would likely help, but they probably need a lot more than that done to them. The brake housings on each side are right in front of the final drives, and the brake cylinders and adjusters are on top. You can get to them from underneath, but you probably should remove the floor the first time you mess with it, as you'll have to shovel the dirt off the top and fix some stuff while you're there. Before you mess with it, find out for sure wether it takes brake fluid or hydraulic oil in the brake system- I don't remember which a 580SE takes, and Case switched back and forth between brake fluid and hydraulic fluid several times. If the wrong fluid gets put in one of the master cylinders, it'll run all the rubber parts in the brake system. If you do manage to get the brakes adjusted so that there's a 'good pedal', but one side or both locks up when you hit the brakes, then the linings are likely worn off... which will tear up the housing, and that's expensive.
