I was out looking at an old Allis-Chalmers backhoe the other day, gas burner, with a 12 volt positive ground electrical system and of course the battery was weak, so not knowing for sure I declined his request to jump it with my truck, so how do you or can you jump a 12 volt positive ground with 12 volt neg. ground system? I did take the battery out for him and he's got it on charge.

You hook up the jumpers just the same, regardless if the system in either machine is positive or negative ground. Positive goes to positive and negative goes to negative. Paralell connection results in 12 volts regardless of amount of batteries or grounding polarity. Just don't have the machines making direct metal contact with each other.
