Hi all, I have the chance to buy a complete (although disassembled) mid 50's Case 310 crawler/loader. The engine runs fine but here is a list of problems with it. (I'm new to crawlers so bear with me!) 1. The final drive is removed to gain access to the steering mechanism of this crawler. According to my girlfriend's father (who used to work on this crawler) it is not a typical steering system with bands and such. I guess the last time it was operated it didn't want steer properly. Didn't get much more info than that other than the fact that it was never fixed because it was too costly. If this is true how costly? 2. What is the parts availability like for this crawler? I've been into wheel tractors for a long time owning several Case products and never had a problem getting parts. Other than that I don't know a lot about this machine. The price sounds right to me at $100, however for not knowing the first thing about crawlers is it a safe bet for a resto project? What does everyone think?

A case 310 crawler has brake bands to steer with and you do not have to remove the final drives to access them, there is a cover on the back of the transaxle you remove to adjust them, if the outside adjustment is used up.The bands can be relined if they are not broken, new ones were available from Case, but not sure if they still are.they use to cost about $150 each,it uses two.If the final drives are open/removed I believe there is probably a lot more wrong than just the steering but the tractor is still worth more than $100 even if for parts.Where are you located I would be interested in it for parts or fixing up? I have parts manuals and a service manual for this tractor if you decide to buy it and could copy the sections you need and email. Hope this helps Terrance

I agree, nobody takes the finals apart because of a steering problem. I'd be willing to bet someone took apart the finals because the splines were worn and found several other problems once inside. You can easily spend $1000 when rebuilding ONE FINAL DRIVE. Many people will try to cobble one up enough to get it sold.
