Scored hydraulic piston rod - what to do?

The rod on the crowd cylinder of my old Trojan backhoe is pitted and scored. Can these kinds of things be filled, fixed, or otherwise repaired at reasonable cost. or should I just put in new seals and let it leak and wear the seals. What's the best kind of rod seal for this situation, a lip seal like a Type B polypack, or a V-stack (which I have now), or some softer material? Machine is used infrequently, but I like to keep it in good shape. Thanks for any advice!

I used C L R s generic equivilant That I bought in k mart. I used a green 3m pot scrubber and soaked it with the Calcium Lime Rust remover and scrubbed the rust pits and stains away untill I was left with just chrome and bare metal pitted holes. Thats as far as I went. I may use epoxy or ? to fill in the tiny holes but Im not sure how to remove the excess without scratching the good remaining crome. At least removing the rust should be a help.

If it is not scored too bad you could try some fine emery cloth and clean it up,if you have high spots the seals wont last long,2 you can have your rod rechromed,or a new rod made using the old eye and piston, your hydraulic shop should be able to help,I have often fitted an extra cheveron to put more of a pinch on the others as a make do.
