My JD 450 has the loader on the front and a backhoe on the back. Have had it about two years now and dug several trenches and this fall have been digging rocks out of my fields. Been working fine until last night it started what I call "surging". Makes a lound surging, pulsing sound and feel when lifting even just the boom or bucket. The hydraulic filter looks old(rusty and scratched) and I was told when I bought it that the pump had been gone through. Do I just have a dirty plugged filter not allowing enough oil through or is my pump going. I have checked the oil levels and they are fine. Still seams to have power to move things but everything jerks around and moves slowly. Any help would be appreciated.

Great info. The surge pin you're talking about still works because when I put my thumb on it my entire body is practically lifted off the ground. This has only been happening since the surging. So sounds like a filter problem to you?I also have a filter up front with the hydrualic pump right in front of the radiator, that is the one I called old. Is this in place of the one in the tank or under the tank? Or do I have the two near the tank you refer to also? Thanks for the quick reponse.

I've been working on JDs since the 50s, but I must admit I'm a little rusty on the 2010s and 450s. That being said, I don't recall there ever being any kind of system hydraulic filter up front near the radiator. You ARE talking about an early 450, or 450 B or C, and not one of the newer machines? I still have a couple of 350 crawler loaders, and I believe their setup is similar to the 450s . . . that is with only two hydraulic filters; both in the hydraulic tank as I mentioned earlier. If you unbolt and remove the cover that has the indicator built into it, one filter hangs upside down and is held in by a long bolt (that tends to fall out). The other is down below the oil. Perhaps the filter you are talking about is the transmission filter that is plumbed into the transmission oil cooler up front? If so, this would have no effect on your main hydraulic functions.

jdemaris, thanks for the help. the filters were exactly as you described. Replaced the paper one and cleanded the metal mesh one. Decided to drain the oil and fill with new. Now works better than ever. Thanks

After my last post I looked at my parts book closer book and discovered that the filter up front is for the transmission. I'm going to replace the two filters in the tank you refered to and see if that does the trick. It is a late sixties crawler loader not a newer one. Thanks for the help.

The JD 450 crawler loader has two hydraulic filters, a suction and a return filter. Your machine probably has a restriction indicator on the top of the hydraulic tank . . . if it's still working. It's a pin that jumps up if there is a restriction. On the subject of filters . . . as I recall, you unbolt the cover on the top of the hydraulic tank and pull it off . . . correct? Bolted to this cover, if it hasn't fallen off, is the return oil filter cartridge. That's only one of the filters. Down, at the bottom of the tank, under the oil, is the suction filter. There's a spring loaded latch on it, you just pull on it to release it. You either have to stick your hand under the oil to do so, or . . . drain the tank. It's no big deal. This filter is not a "throw away" unit but is a fine steel mesh unit that can be cleaned and reused. Some people don't know it exists and thus it gets neglected.
