Seem to be having some electrical issues with my tractor. Several weeks ago starter barely turned over and of course engine wouldn't start. Ended up buying 2 new batteries, grinding/cleaning all terminals until new copper showed. Removed started cleaned all terminal. Put everything back together. Started like a dream! Amp meter showed batteries charging and I checked with voltmeter and get 14.5 volts, so OK. Today, went to start and only could hear solenoid clicking. Amp gauge in dash shows the batteries to be charged. When turn key to start the amp meter drops WAY into RED zone. 64 million dollar question is where do I start now?? Any/all help is appreciated. Thanks, Tom

if you can't find the cause, you can always do what i did with my deere.put in a main cable cut-off switch.if you hide it , it will also confuse would-be thieves. -brutus-

Check the voltage of the batteries with a voltmeter. Amp meter does not show condition of battery. If the batteries have discharged with nothing on--lights, key left in on position, have the alternator and voltage regulator tested. If the regulator has gone out, it can discharge the batteries or if the brushes in the alternator have worn out they can cause a short in the alternator which will discharge the batteries. You may also have a short in the wiring.

Been through this with our 580E. Dealer says to run a new ground cable from the negative post on the battery to one of the mounting bolts on the starter. This eliminates problems with the braided ground straps. Hope this helps.

Dirty or corroded connections. You have enough of a connection to power up the guages, but as soon a a heavy load is applied the connection is lost. Check the battery cables where the ends are attached, could be corroded inside the terminals, could be a dirty connection at the starter also.
