Recently a fella bought an HD20 a friend of mine rebuilt, and He took it to his property and the the new owner said he was easing around with it till he got used to it and it quit pulling. Its got power going to the tramission all the gears are perfect in the trans. But it has a popping in the right rear runder the fuel tank above the final drive. It quits popping when in gear and the right clutch and brake is ingaged. It gets faster/ worse the left is engaged. Im going back down there in a couple days to check the ccess plates if he moves the fuel tank for me. Anyone got any hints on whit theis could be. Ive used this machine on a few good sized jobs and the fella kinda has me on the spot about it. I meant to look and see what the last thing he was pushing at the end of the trail to see what he was/ how he was pushining on it. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Taylor Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you are saying the popping/noise goes away when you try to steer right. When you get to the tractor, drive it and see if it wants to steer right when trying to push a load straight. Sounds like the teeth are broken off the final drive pinion on the right side but it could be the pinion flange broken or come loose on the splines or even the clutch it's self. I would change the final drive oil first and look for big nardnarvels( chunks of metal )from broken teeth. If the oil coming out just looks like normal then look in the steering clutch compartment. You may need to rig up a pail of fuel to run it with the cover off and see what is going on in htere if it's not obvious. Email me if you want. Later Bob

Bob its not pulling at all, thet transmission and all turns And it pops at the right rear it gets quieter in the when the right clutch and brake is used and louder when the left side is used. I may see it tomorrow with the tank off. Its not pulling at all is what gets me. I thought it may be a bevele gear or something broken but havent checked yet. THe fella told me it was a broken axle he tohought but i told him it wouldnt affect both sides if it was an axle. Plus itd try to pull. I hate i told him about the dozer his friends act like i new it was bad but ive used the machine on 4 big jobs and it worked fine. I think he did a run and go at a stump. I thought it maight be the shaft at from the transmission to the rearend but why would it get louder with on and quiet on the other

I think you are right Taylor, if it will not move at all. It may have had the bevel gear shaft bearings going out of it and increased the backlash then a big shock load like you say finished off the pinion teeth. Can you take the pto cover off and look in there or does it have a winch on it? If you do get a look in there put a prybar behind the bevelgear and see if the bearings are tight or slack. Check the bevel gear bolts too, they might have sheared. Later Bob

Thanks Bob, Ill have to build and A frame to pull the PCU winch. He called las night and the tanks is off, Ill try to get there today and look. I havent tried it yet but the fella said the blade still raises. IS here anyway to access the bevel geear from the top on the HD20. I couldnt tell the last time I looked. He made sure it went bad in a good spot off road. Thanks again for your help Bob.

The clutches and bevel gear have to be taken out through the top. I don't know much about AC tractors but I think they have 3 covers. Old IHC tractors,TD24&25's have one big cover but they don't have steering clutches, the two speed unit all comes out in one piece.I think AC is much like a cat though. The more I think about it that poping sound you describe makes me think it's bolts sheared off more than a pinion stripped. If it's bolts you might put in a few new ones and get it to a better spot to work on it. Later Bob

Bob We got the top of the bevel gear off, the pto shats is good but the bevel gears arent so lucky. I found a stump that looks like it helped finish it off. It has a big indenention in it that goes about 6 inches deep. THere is a place a few hours from here that has some HD 20 parts also my neighbor has a few parts HD 19's that he says should have the same gears. Thanks for your help Bob, I may need a nerve pill before this one is over lol.
