Stopped dozer to use another piece of equipment, went to restart it within 30 minutes, and it wouldn't start. Turning key to start results in one "click," like the relay switch on starter. Battery seems to be charged. There is 24 volts on heavy wire to "can" on starter. What is this can? Is it the relay, or a capaciter? It is labeled "24 Volts." I have a service manual, but it does not included wiring. Thanks for you help. Walt

Thanks to everyone who gave me their ideas, the dozer is back at work. I still have to fix the problem right, but it is jury-rigged now, and can be started at any time. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of electrical drawings for this machine? Also, is there a quick way to determine if solenoid switch is bad, verus the netural lockout switch? Again, thanks for your input. That's what I like about this site--real answers! Walt

Have the same problem with my D31P. What did you find to be problem? I went around safety switch and I can start by shorting out the soleno

id and hot battery cable.I think problem is the switch or solenoid. Thanks for any help.

i also have a d21-a5. it wouldn"t roll over. i jumped the back 12volt battery with my truck and it started right up. i ran it for 8 hours and shut it off and it wouldn"t start again without a jump on the back battery. at that time i measured 12.4 volts on the front battery and 11.7 on the back battery. when i got it running again i checked both batteries at 12.4v and 12.1v shouldn"t i be seeing 13 volts on one or both batteries while the machine it running. i am questioning the alternator, is there any other tests i can do?
thanks

If poor contact of batt cables is the problem here is a tip I like. Watch the terminals preferably in the dark when you or helper hits startes switch. YOU may see a spark where the problem is. You can also feel the cable ends with your bare hand after pushing the starter switch a few times. Look for a warm connection. The good connections should be stone cold while a warm one will indicate a dirty connection.

Take the cables off the battery and wire brush those terminals. Your symptoms are classic. If cleaning the battery connections doesn't fix the problem, I'll refund whatever you paid me for the advice. Good luck, Jim

I am not sure on the D21 but the large Komatsu dozers have a relay bu the starter so that you can not start with the engine running - the relay is ran off of the R terminal on the alt. If the doide goes out on the alt there is power coming out of the R terminal and can not start the machine. Trun the key on and see if the battery light comes on if not check the r terminal on the alt - if has power that is the problem should only have power if alt is turning.

That "can" is the solenoid switch for the starter motor,it has two functions, when you select the start position the magnetic coil inside pulls a plunger that engages the starter gear with the ring gear on the engine flywheel,it then pushes a contact plate aginst the two heavy connections on the back and sends current into the starter, make sure all the cable connections are clean and tight including the earth, check that the battery insulator solenoid clicks in when you switch on,you could try crossing the solenoid from the main cable to where the light wire goes, make sure the machine is out of gear and the brake set,a tap on the solenoid has been known to work in case the plunger is sticking.AJ

It is possible for the battery to carry a hot surface charge but have a shorted cell. Putting the battery under load with a tester will show if it is good. Pete
