I have a JD 420c with dozer blade that has a heavy leak coming from the hydraulic control valve. It seems to be coming from the top of the down tube that goes into the fluid resivour. I just removed the entire control but am afraid to start taking it apart. Is anyone familliar with repairing this or should i start looking for a replacement? Thanks

Whew thats a relief. Something i can fix myself. Could save a few bucks considering i had to have the engine split last month to fix the forward/reverse.Thanks Paul

Paul, There is an 0-ring that goes around the return line, and when they get old, it will start to leak oil. The valve is not difficult to take apart, but order all of the seals in the valve before you take it apart. If you have it apart, replace the seals, you will definitely crack some on disassembly. I'm not familiar with this particular unit, but unless something is cracked, which you could probably see, I don't think it's going to be a big deal. First, you need to be sure where the leak is in the circuit. Your description suggests that it is where the fluid return line goes back to the reservoir. Make sure of that. Does it really go back to the reservoir, or is there another valve (or even a filter) in series with this one. The strange thing about it going directly back is that that should be at low pressure, probably hard to get a big leak from unless it is clogged downstream. Is that line a hose or pipe? Should not be hard to disconnect it from the valve and see if it's a bad connection. Maybe it got whacked and cracked, or an O-ring wore out. Hydraulic parts are not bad to take apart because the oil keeps them in good shape. I think that if you just go about this methodically, you'll find the problem and be able to solve it. (Don't panic.)
