Just bought a Galion 118 with UD554. Starts on gas, but when switching to diesel, does not allow fuel to first 3 cylinders. Injection pump has following numbers on ID plate..[as best I can see]32802.....R9....53 ?...D554.. Exhaust is hot on 4,5,6 but cool on first three cylinders. Do not want to spend $1000 + to have pump rebuilt. Will probably be cheaper to re-engine w/ old cummins or Detroit 6-71. Engine sounds solid.. good oil pressure..

There are two plunger units in that pump. The front one is probably bad. If you take the cover off the top of the pump you will see where the output lines from the plungers go to the distributor block. You can exchange the plunger unit, but then you will have to adjust the turnbuckle in the linkage between them to get the cylinders balanced. It may be worth getting the whole pump gone through. Don't know a lot about these engines, but are you getting fuel which is not burning or is it a case of no fuel at all to those cylinders? Check the injector lines. Are those injectors working? If compression ratio on that bank is still set as for gas operation, diesel could possibly be running into the sump instead of burning. If so check change-over linkage and isolator valves for operation/condition. May be that the pump rack is adrift or broken only allowing fuel to three injectors. You might as well have a look anyway, if you are not bothered about a repair. My guess, on the limited information, at 3000 miles, is the linkage. Regards,RAB

RAB..... No fuel is coming out of the #1,2,+3 stands at the pump.. Have removed the injection lines for these cylinders...They are clear..Nothing coming out of pump on these 3. Squirted heavy oil into top of the towers for these and they squirt up. Seems like problem is between twin towers where fuel enters injection pump and where these three injector lines are fed. Have been told that the rear tower feeds the last three cylinders and the front tower feeds the first three. Disassembled towers and see no problem. They have something resembling a needle valve which has vanes. Without a manual, I am not comfortable going furthur into the pump. Would like to get a kit and a manual. Back half of the injection pump [feeding the last three cylinders]works fine and the engine fires and runs strong on these three. Have a feeling it is a blocked passage or stuck valve between the front tower and the first three injector pistons. Any idea where I can find a manual ? Dick

Hi Dick, If your first post had detailed injector line checks I would not have made a post! Obvious now that it is the pump. Seems like it may be only a small problem - once you can nail it down. Good luck. Regards, RAB

What could be causing the failure of fuel to get to Injectors 1,2,+ 3. It is getting to # 4,5,+ 6.

Is there any chance that the number could be 270 431 R91 or 270 430 R91 ?? These were the standard injection pumps for the IH UD817 engine, one that started on gas and switched over to diesel after a short warmup. Is yours a used or rebuilt pump ?

Brian, Do you still have the injection pump that you were talking about in the UD554 post? If you do are you wanting to sell it? If so, what is the condition, and the price you are asking for. Please let me know at my email: grconn@prodigy.net. Gordon
