I have an older Datsun Forklift. I recently noticed that the hydraulics bleed off when I have a load on the forks. This just started after a neighbor borrowed it. What is the problem?

I would guess that the piston seals are worn, in which case you would need to take the head off the cylinder and replace them; I would do the rod seal and wiper at the same time. Not a big job. Could also be a leak through a warn O-ring in the control valve.

Is the main cylinder leaking down or the tilt cylinders leaking forward?

The main cylinder is leaking down. It is worse when I have a load on it.

Like Charlie mentioned. It may be leaking past the piston if equiped. Some lift cylinders simply displace the rod as a piston. If yours is set up this way, you won't have a piston or piston seal and since you did not mention that it was leaking externally, the problem will have to be the control valve. Most piston style lift cylinders will have a return hose connected at the top of the barrel. If leaking past piston you will notice oil flowing through this return line.
