I looked up my tractor on the ytmag serial number list and it says its a 1945. I needed some parts for the 3-71 Detroit Diesel engine. I gave My parts guy at DD the S/n of the engine and he researched it and says the motor was sold to Allis Chalmers in Dec of 1940! Talk about just in time manufacturing! Does anybody know of another Allis machine that used the 3-71 in that era? Could my motor be from a different tractor? Or could Allis Chalmers have bought an engine almost 5 years before it was put into a tractor or could the ytmag serial number look up be wrong??

Tim, It's very likely the engine may have been changed in the last 50+ years. That engine also was put in the AD-3 grader. I have both a 47 HD-7 and AD-3. You should find any Detroit parts are readily availible. I also have a 3-71 that threw a rod if you need anything from it. Chuck

It's a 1945 by my book. As per the motor, who knows, could have been setting on someones selve for a long time or switched out later. I have a complete running HD-7 with a Detroit I would like to sell. Question on my part, were they 3-71's or 353's at that time???

AC used 3-71s, 4-71s, and 6-71s in the HD-7,10,14 machines of 1940 through 1950. In the late 40s AC came out with the redesigned crawlers starting with the 2-71 powered HD-5, dropped the 3-71 for the 4-71 HD-9, 6-71 HD-15 and HD-19 which was replaced by the HD-20 with the 6-110 Detroit. AC also used 71 series engines in their graders of the period. In the mid-50s, AC bought Buda repowered most of their equipment with Buda/AC engines. The notable expection being the 12V-71 in their big scrappers. So far as I know AC had pretty much quit using GM/Detroit engines prior to the 53 series.
