Hi, I've got a JD 440 being delivered today. Its my first dozer - I read the archives here before buying it, but have a few more questions... The manual says to use a low pressure grease gun on the roller and idler bearings, but my industrial JD dealer doesn't know how to get one. Any suggestions? Also, the water pump is leaking. Friendly dealer says $700+ for a new pump, but that I can likely just replace gaskets and bearings. Any words of advice on what to look for when repairing this pump? Last, any ideas where to find a winch for logging that will work with this dozer (I'm in VT)? Thanks in advance - Sam C.

Someone posted here or on my board recently that he had found a Lincoln brand low pressure gun, part #1037. I have not checked to see if any of my local parts houses can order it or not, but I am going to. I can get you new or rebuilt water pumps for a lot less than that, or parts are available from Deere to repair your old one. Main thing is the impeller will need to be refaced so the seal will work. I have a Gearmatic 8A winch and canopy for a 440 if you are interested. Go to my website, and you can contact me through there. Lavoy

Only possible problem with the 420/440 and 1010 series water pumps is they are thin walled. If the wrong guy tries to rebuild one, quite often the housing gets cracked and trashed from trying to press out a stuck bearing assembly. Anyway, a question for Lavoy. You mentioned refacing the impeller. I've been wondering if anyone sells one piece seals like JD uses now in the 350/450 waterpumps? Those seals are "self sealing" and don't need an impeller to ride on. It seems someone ought to have the same style seals to fit these older pumps, but I haven't researched it. I just put a new seal and bearing in one of my 1010s, but. . . was in a hurry and didn't want to start a reseach project. So, I stuck the old impeller on a belt sander and put it all back together.

Check with your local parts store they can probably find a high volume grease gun. These are the same as the regular gun expect the pump piston is about 1/2" in diameter. Be very careful even with this gun as it is easy to miss the slight increase in pumping resistance indicating the roller is full and blow out the seal bellows.

you didn't say if the dozer was a gas or diesel. I have a gm 2-53 in mine and the water pump was easy to get at the local gm diesel house. I recall it cost about 140.00. the only caution on the pump was that the PULLEY for the pump is a JD proprietary part and I was not able to find one. I ended up pulling off the one on the rebuilt pump and replacing the old one back on the new pump. good luck
