Im currently looking into getting my first cat. I have found a JD 450. Here are the issues. It needs new steering clutches and main clutch. I called and talked to the owner... He said he had his mechanic take it apart to change out the cluthes and in the mean time got frustrated because the guy was taking too long to finish the job. He said it is currently all there just in pieces the moter is on the ground and the winch and canopy is also off. Not sure what else could be off. He wants $3000 for it as is. the moter has been recently overhauled. It also has a 6 way blade. According to ower everything works great. So All I would need to do is get new clutches and reassemble the crawler. I have a good friend that is farmilier with crwalers so I wont be in the dark about it. Im going to go look at it so Ill have more of an idea whats involved. so is it worth 3000 or should I offer him less/ run away from it? Thanks Dillon in Oregon

Dillon at the risk of incuring the rath of the jd lovers I must say that refuring a JD as a CAT is very insulting at the least. But from someone who had a 450b the best place for it is the way it is now. In the 4 years we had it it cost $12500 in repairs. Had to cary a toolbox to tighten up every thing before you started every time. the blade goes up and down slow, it leaked oil everyware. Had the engine out 3 times, 1 for bad engine, 2 for bad trans, 3 for broken bell housing. Had a previous JD dealer tell me that the 450b was the worst machine JD ever built. Last year We bought a JD555g we thought 1997 machine had to be better and altho I like the operation of the 555 it is just not built very heavy. kinda disapointed by the way the loader arms twist under load. I don't want to rain on your parade but unless you just want something to rebuild a use for show you might want to consider something else. Like a real CAT.

Dillon: Sounds pretty good but beware. Take a close look at the main clutch huosing where it bolts to the frame and trans. They are noted for coming loose and breaking. Also where the frame rails attach to the steering clutch housings. The frame rails break there. If it all looks good and tight and does'nt appear to have been cobbed up then it's probably a pretty good deal. If you need parts we can help you out. Good luck.

I went and looked at the crawler today... I found out it is a 1972 450B. It is definatly in pieces. the Tracks are off and the clutches are out. the oporators station is off also the engine/radiator is off. Some questions... The engine was on the ground and I could turn it over by hand using the flywheel. It was fairly hard but it did turn over. Should this be possible? Also The trans cover is off and the gears in the trans have light rust on them. Should they be replaced? The Hr. Meter says it has 4349 hours. The idlers need replaced. It needs All new hoses. and Brake Bands. Any Idea on what new hoses wolud cost? Thanks for the quick reply. Dillon

One more unsolicited opinion? Earthmoving equiptment reminds me of a theory my father had about antique car restoration that sure had a ring of truth. Everybody THINKS they can get it done cheaper. Truth is buy one already done & ready to go & let the guy who restored it take the big financial loss not to mention the manhours.. Theory was GOLDEN when it came to the old cars & I'm finding similarities as I play in the dirt....
