I have a Case 310E dozer, which runs good, but looks rough. I'm thinking that I will do some clean-up and put a 50ft paint job on it this winter, mainly to preserve the metal. Since there is a lot of rust, I'm curious what methods people use to prepare the surface for painting. Mere sanding will not do the trick, and I don't want to spend a ton of work on it!! Also, what are the original paint colors/paint scheme for the 310E? Do you know where I can get new emblems/stickers or it? Thanks for any advice. Brad

I don't want to be critical of Bill's advice because I have no idea what condition his machine was in to begin with, but my own experience has shown that pressure washing is totally useless on rust. I had a fellow come in with a portable sand blaster and he took my IH 500 down to bare grey metal on 90 per cent of the machine in about 45 min.s including setup. Cost me $100., now having said that, you may not have anyone in your area that does this work and prices vary. This machine was very rusty as it had been tarped for years in a shed on damp clay. Cover anything you don,t want sand to get into with plastic sheeting taped on well, the sand just bounces off of the plastic or tape. Tape over number tags and if your lettering is not to bad you can cover the area it is on with good sticky tape, something thick and rubbery or plastic like works well as long as the air don't pick it off. Cover air intakes and breathers very well. It won,t hurt hoses, but will take off the plating on fittings. That may not be a concern if the machine is rusty anyway and you can paint them after if you want. It will not remove caked grease or oil so have the machine clean. Be ready to paint as soon as possible as it will rust quick with the bare metal. Work on a warm day to avoid runs in paint. Takes about 1 1/2 gallons to do my machine 2 coats. The machine will look like new and it will be the best money spent on keeping that machine looking good for another 30 years.

Just went this route with a trailer. Pressure washed her with a 4000psi pressure washer & with a airless sprayer laid on some Rustoleum right from the hardware store. True value has their own version of Rustoleum with a decent equiptment yellow color. The trailer looks good at 10 paces or 20mph without a lot of effort. The pressure washer got the loose paint & heavy rust off. Just a thought....
