Gentlemen, What is the advantage to rubber tracks? I am looking to buy a small crawler, and have no experience with rubber tracks. Currently still have a D6, no longer have my D3B, or D9, all of which were on steel. I see the obvious benefit of not having pins/bushings, but what is the service life like in comparison to steel?

Rubber tracks are mainly used on small machines but they are making their way into bigger units all the time. The advantages of rubber is mainly in not damaging any pavement when traveling the machine. In the Pacific Northwest of the US we have many here being used in residential site developement. JimInOz has it right by stating they are much good for hard pushing. In addition they seem to find any sharp edges that can cut. It's been my experience so far that they cost about twice as much as steel and last at best half as long.

If you put rubber on a crawler ,they will tear when you get into heavy push/pull situation.I have a Mits.BD2G rubber track that has a link torn away from the rest of the track.Plus rubber is very expensive. If you want low impact,go with a wider plate or triple grouser.,which will give less traction, but better flotation with reasonable grip. The small Jap dozers had rubber for unique situations, not for heavy dozing work.
