I have a 1948 TD9 dozer with a leaky rear seal. It looks like the seal is a two piece seal. Will I have to pull the engine to replace the seal or is there a way to do it without removing the engine? Thanks

you done have to pull the engine to replace the rear seal. what you do have to do is remove the clutch and flywheel to get access to the rear seal. If you dont have a service book i would recomemd that you get one. it will show you step by step how to remove the clutch and flywheel. you will need something to lift the flywheel out of the houseing after you unbolt it, i beleive it weighs around 450lbs or more.

CHANGING THE SEAL IS A BIG JOB, BUT YOU ALSO GET TO SERVICE OTHER THINGS WHEN YOU DO IT, (CLUTCH, STARTER), YOU REMOVE THE RAD, THEN THE MOTOR, I HAVE BIG PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR SEALS ON MY TD-9 FREIGHTING CATS, IN THE -45c COLD THE FELT SEALS ALWAYS SHRINK AND LEAK. SO WE HAVE CHANGED LOTS OVER THE YEARS. THE TRICK IS GOOD QUALITY SEAL AND LOTS OF OIL WHEN ASSEMBLED.THANKS
