First those transmission they were sliding gear.

Second Do not panic. This is a common problem found on many old crawler tractors and farm tractors.

What has probably happend is that you have two forks that are engaged as the result of the shift interlock not working properly. On the right side of the trany there is a row of bolts, behind those bolts are some springs and ball bearings. Those ball bearings in combination with the shift interlock plunger that is just below that and part of the shifting housing at the bottom is supposed to prevent that from happening.

So what you do is to get the pressure off the interlock devices. Normally on the the side ones. You might have to take a 5 or 6 foot pry bar with a small end on it. Match it to the shift lever end, which should be a ball and the it will pop right in place. You should be good to go.

Since you are not hearing gear clashing because you will know about it. AC trannys and more than one gear in place at a time was the best way to trany disintegration. It will really make a noise as it comes around,I would doubt that that you have as big a problem as stated.

If you need to take the trany out. It comes out really easily on that machine and they are very easy to rebuild. It can be done in a couple of hours to get out at most. No need to take engine out or any thing. Just remove drive shaft, remove all steering and brake and clutch levers out of the way. You can the with a hook and eye lift it right out of there. Suggestion, Use a pair of guide bolts to get it out straight. No need to remove the fuel tank if you have something with a highenough lift if not fuel tank can come off to help you get it out of there easier out the back end.

You can conduct a quick inspection of the trany without having to take it all out. Just take the side cover off use a flash light and a cd rom. Yes I said cd rom preferably one of those AOL ones you get in the mail all the time and you can get a good look see inside the trany to see any damage that there is. They make great mirrors and are free which is even better. If you want put the trany in neutral and you can use the pilot shaft to move everything around to see what is going on.

If you happen to need parts,I a very large selection of parts availabe to me for that machine and the transmission and even complete good tranys for that machine.

Check out ibdozing.com. Largest site on the web devoted to the old AC crawler tractors.

You have a great machine and it should last for a long time to come with a bit of TLC.

Take the floor plates off,

Then take the gear shift lever out. There should be bolts on either side that hold it in place. It will lift right out. You do not need to worry about how it came out because it is the same on both sides.

When you look into the area where you removed the gear shift lever, you should see three rods with each rod have a small detent in it. The middle rod the detent is full cut through. What you will want so to get them all in a line. When you look interior into there you will see that they are now staggered. If you losen the shift interlock screws on the side of the tranny--located right next to the gear shift lever housing. They should pop into place without a whole lot of force.

All you do is put the lever in there and you will work it in the direction need to get the gear back into the correct postion. Move the one that is least out of line.

Please make sure that you are not on a hill. If you have a lot of pressure on the tranny, it will make it harder to get it back in place.

Hope that helps
