Which is heavier, oil or water?

Hi, I am still pondering an old TD-6, and it has set for 16 years, really letting the oil settle. So, does oil float on water, or does water float on oil. Just so that when I check the oil, I can tell how much water is in it. I think that oil is lighter than water, and if that is the case, any water would come out first during an oil change. Right? Or, would the water have evaporated or dissipated? Mark

Mark, Specific Gravity : The specific gravity of any fluid is the relation the fluid bears by weight to the same volume of water. Water has a specific gravity of 1.00 As petroleum is lighter than water, its specific gravity is expressed by decimals less than unity. a)Water specific gravity being 1.00 b)Petroleum specific gravity… oils, minerals, lubricants 0.88--0.94

Chris hit it on the head. Just loosen the drain plugs and the water will flow out. I recently drained a tranny of an old JD M that had set for 7 years, 2 quarts of water ran out before any oil started to drip.

Water is 8 pounds per gallon while oil is about 7 pounds per gallon. Look for the specific gravity number on the type of oil you are using for more accurate value.

OUR gallon of water would weigh 10 pounds. But, there again it's easier to remember one decimetre cubed of water weighs 1 kilogram and then not get tied up with those old Imperial and American units. Regards, RAB

oil floats on water, thats why after sitting parked for a few weeks you should loosen drain plugs and let the water out

Jeeze, high school chemistry, of which I remember almost nothing. Of course oil and water weigh the same-the pound of feathers, pound of potatoes thing. It has to do with something I think is called specific gravity. Oil gas etc. float on water. Our last flood, I saw full fuel storage tanks floating down the river.

Hello Mark, --- 7 / Oct. / 2003 --- On all fuels (GAS, Diesel, and etc.) and transmission oils -- water is allways heaver and settles to the bottom. Oil and water will NOT mix when setting over night, nor with any fuel, water will go to the bottom. Regards, Milton
