If your still looking and have a hole or don't know if you have a hole to put it. Please call 1-800-531-1038 ask for Ted. We convert Cat engines to direct electric and we have done D4-7u's.

The Cats from about '55 on have the hole for mounting a starter on the bellhousing covered by a plate. this is directly below the pony pinion. If you have this setup you can easily find a starter to fit. Leave the pony in place, you might need it someday.

I was at the cat house buying parts and heard the parts man tell a customer that he wouldn't even won't to know what it would cost to switch over.It would probably be more than the tractor is worth.

Cactus -- Not sure on the D4, but it's about $ 2000 on a D6, plus fabrication time of course. You can get lots of advice and parts on ACMOC, too. If I may ask, why do you want to convert? If you're in a cold climate, you really should add glow plugs to the precombustion chambers and that's more $ yet. Personally, I'd get the pony running just perfect and it'll do the job better than any electric starter. Cost is usually about the same to convert vs. to do a pony rebuild. Pete

The clutch on pony motor is going out,(or is out) you have to get the pony running good then shut it off and engage the big motor than start the pony and the big motor together.and then it about jerks your arm off, but the big motor starts on about the second revolution.

Cactus -- Just curious, you say you have to shut down the pony, then engage the pinion and start the pony again. When you do get the pony engaged, if you leave the clutch in the disengaged position will the pony spin the diesel against compression? (Especially in cold weather is is not uncommon to roll over the diesel with compression released even with the clutch supposedly out.) If it does, it sounds like your clutch is stuck or adjusted way too tight. Your call of course, but if your pony runs well, you may be further ahead to free/adjust the clutch or even replace the clutch and brake. I don't know the expense involved offhand but sure would be easier than doing the starter bit. Pete
