i just picked up a 1973 John Deere 550c dozer. the engine, body, and hydraulics are in excellent condition. However, when i go to push something very heavy, like a boulder, the the left track will spin, and the right track stops. does this sound like a problem with the clutch? how would i go about fixing something like that?

First check the steering spool adjustment under the seat. Turn the spool in , with the eye bolt still attached to the linkage until it bottoms in the bore, then shorten it by about one turn back in...But it sounds like you have a steering clutch problem developing . That involves removing it, which involves breaking the track, removing the sprocket , removing the fuel tank hydraulic tank battery box assembly, removing the top cover of the steering clutch housing, and then removing the steering clutch assembly. Sometimes its just a broken hose in the clutch housing , which doesnt require the track and sprocket removal, but you never know what condition the steering clutch is in and replacing the hose may not fix it permanently. A failed steering clutch is usually the start of what develops into a major transmission failure on those gems. The contaminated oil destroys the transmission components and what you are left with is usually better off being scrapped due to high parts prices..Fix it now...or scrap it later...
