Have a 1977 410 JD backhoe a straight 410 the older ones it has a leak in the front mounted pump where the shaft goes into the pump from the engine. It doesn't seem to have any affect on the backhoe as far as power but will probable continue to leak more as time goes by. Can these pumps be overhauled or do I need to get a new one AND if I were to get it overhauled should I do it sooner than later. I just use this hoe for myself and only put a few hours on it per year but don't want to hurt the pump beyond repair by using it if it can be repaired. Thanks for any help len in michigan

Yes I have rebuilt many of these. You will find the problem is a groove worn in the shaft seal surface. You can buy a seal kit for these and the shaft can be replaced or welded up and turned down to specs. or a speedy sleeve might work. I am a ex. J.D mech of 30yrs. Its not a hard job you can do it yourself.

I'd like to ask you a question. I've got a JD400 backhoe, and at times it seems to me like the front hydraulic pump is nosiy...what I'm asking is this...how much noise does your pump make? I've got the JD manual and am getting ready to do the 3000psi test, but I just thought I'd ask to see if you can hear yours running. Mine is a diesel, but I can hear the pump above the engine as its sitting at a high idle. Thanks.

The pressure setting not relevant in regard to the noise. When all is right the pump is quiet. The noise, e.g. "chatter" is most likely caused by one of two possibilities. #1 your pump drive is loose (external), or #2 the hydraulic stroke control valve is leaking (internal). In regard to the pump drive, it can get loose in two places. One, where the splined section clamps tight around the pump's shaft - either with a set of two, or four 3/8" bolts; or where the cast-iron coupler couples to the other coupler that attaches to the engine crankshaft pulley. Here, there is an aluminum (or pot metal) coupler with two halves and held together by two 3/8" bolts and nuts. After you remove it, there's a set of four little rubber cushions that wear out. Easy to fix if caught in time. In regard to item #2, i.e. the hydraulic pump stroke control valve. It's inside the pump and is a commonly replaced (or repaired) wear item. It determines at what pressure your pump shuts off at (i.e. your stand-by pressure). There is an allen-wrench set screw on the pump that sets the pressure. When the valve starts to leak, it will "hammer" and often make the engine turn over hard, sometimes causing the starter motor to fail. It can be removed with taking the pump off. You can either buy a new valve and seat, or there's one other option. Although the Deere service manual won't suggest this, I've removed many of these valves and refaced them on a valve refacing machine. Not quite as good as new, but most worked fine.

Good luck. I just noticed a typo in the last message I posted. I meant to write that the hydraulic stoke control valve can be removed WITHOUT removing the pump. Sorry.

Thank you very much for responding to my question, I really appreciate it. It may be a day or so before I have time to mess with it, but I'll post back here and let you know what I find out. Once again---thank you.

A major source of noise usually comes from the drive coupling rather than the pump itself. Disassemblr the two half clamps and inspect the neoprene type bushings they clamp onto. Also check the "sloppiness" of the splined end at the pump.

Yes, it's repairable. If it's leaking from the shaft, it will need a new oil seal, and behind it, the high pressure quad-ring seal replaced. Chances are the shaft might need tightening also. It rides on adjustable Timken style cone bearings. Pump needs to be dissassemble to accomplish all this.
