Can anyone give any advice on whether the John Deere 450B or the Carterpillar 941 crawler loader is the all around better machine? I am looking to dig some basements, clear for roads, and dig some ponds. I have the option to buy either. I am looking for performance, reliability, and cost of repairs. I live in central Missouri and welcome any opinion.

Being a old J.D heavy Equip. mech. I would say to buy the cat. The 450&450-B models were always a problem with steering clutches, it didn't get better till they went to the 450-C with the wet clutches.

I would't buy a 450-B, a 450-C or newer is the only way to go as the C model and newer have the wet steering cluthes and are very reliable compared to the B model dry cluthes. I can't speak for the Cat I was a J.D heavy equip. mech. from 1970 to 1985, before I took a easier county Park job.

Having some experience on both machines the Cat is gonna outwork the JD but only because the Cat is 2 sizes bigger than the JD, both preform well, I'd hafta give a nod to the Cat for overall toughness and durability, both are expensive to repair, the JD B's have dry clutches that constantly need adjusting it seems, the B production stopped about '74 or '75, I'm not sure on the Cat but would guess it would be in the 70's as well.

Hi, Bob. I'm no 'expert' on the subject but I thought they came out in the early 70's. The man I am currently working for has what he says is the last Cat 941 sold new by Hastings Deering, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, in 1973. He got it from a local farmer who apparently used to take it out for a walk twice a year whether it needed it or not and it 1580 hours on it when he bought it 4 1/2 years ago. It now has approaching 7,000. It was in mint condition then and still pretty good now. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Yes Deas, they where current tractors in the 70's I was refering to the end of production in 80 or there abouts. That was a nice find he made there. A friend of mine worked for Hastings Deering on a couple of his sabaticals to OZ. Later Bob

Hi, Ryan. Like Bob, I can't speak for the JD 450. I CAN speak for the Cat 941. It is one of the most bullet-proof track loaders ever made. It has the power to handle its weight and the weight to put the power on the ground. It is not quite as fast over the ground as some but still no slouch and it takes a pretty fair bucketfull with it. Like everything else, maintenance is the key to a good run. Given equal condition for the two machines, I'd take the Cat. My 2 cents. Hope this helps. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I can't speak for the John Deere machine but I do know the 941 is a good loader. Later Bob
