I am in the process of rebuilding a 1957 TD6. The right steering clutch is frozen. I was trying to remove the clutch using the manual. The manual says that the clutch can be removed from the top without removing the tracks. I followed the removal directions, but there doesn't seem to be any way to remove the clutch shaft (or the clutch)from the top. Can anyone help? Please!!

I have a 50 TD6 that had the clutch blown apart inside. The book says to use the special pieces but in a pinch sisnce at the time I did not have the book I used some wedges. The object is to compress the clutch spring so the housing and shaft slide out. The spring has ~1200 psi on it. Witht the wedges the unit will slide out but it is tight.

I am trying to take the steering clutches out of a TD 6 as well. What do the compressors bars that you are talking about look like? Are they the 7/16" bolts or are they something else. Where do you get them and how do you use them? My clutches are so worn that I can't get the flange open enough to get at the bolts on the spline shaft.

The bolts are uesd to compress the spring. This is done after you remove the clutch from the TD6, and remove the drum from the clutch.

The clutch will come out from the top, undo all the bolts on the track side, undo all the blots that hold the flange to the bevel gear housing, get 3 7/16" UNC bolts about 3" long and screw them into the clutch hub to compress the spring, with the spring compressed get the flange out and the shaft will come out of the bevel gear, you should now be able to lift the clutch straight up. OK, if I remove all the bolts around the the flange on the bevel gear bearing and move to the right (in this case) the shaft will come out? I can't compress the spring because the clutch is frozen. I see no seperation in the shaft in the shaft. Where is the seperation? or do I have to compress the left clutch to get the right shaft out. Do I get more space when I remove the bolts on the track side?

Tim when you take the bolts out of the bearing retainer for the ring gear it will slide towared the clutch there are 6 bolte that hold 2 half round locks - three bolts per lock that have to come out before the shaft will slide intowards the ring gear. From factory the bolts had lock wire in them but just put loctite on them when you put back together. you will have o turn the clutch to get the bolts out just like when taking the outside flange bolts out. Hope that you marked the outside flange as the spacing is off on one bolt hole for when you go backtogether.

The flange holds the shaft into the bevel gear centre, when the clutch spring is compressed and the flange out tight up aginst the clutch the shaft will slide out ot the bevel gear and into the clutch just enough so you can lift the clutch up,you will need to take the weight to slide the shaft. Tim---The steering clutch assembly is removable without separating the track. You will need three(3) special compressors to keep the multiple disc clutch pack together in the process. Those special compressors,to my knowledge, are not a service part and will be fabricated in a machine shop.I have disassembled a TD-9 and a 175C Dresser loader and the compressors are a must.Your shop manual should show specs.on dimensions. If I can be of more assistance, please feel free to send an E-Mail.. My shop manual doesn't talk about compressors. What do they look like and where do you put them?
