Has anybody ever repowered a JD 420c with a car engine? I'm only thinking about it cause I've got a good 3 cylinder Subaru gas engine and Couldn't sleep and started thinking about why not?

I was actually going to keep engine and tranny together and run a drive shaft back to the crawlers transmission, but now I have a party interested in the engine. I didn't really need a bunch of people telling me it was difficult. What would we repower a JD 420c with? We've got practically unlimited space up front, being that you can put aside the original sheet metal, so for the sake of the experience, everybody, what would you use? For the record, my engine is fine right now....

It would be a difficult installation at best. The original engine turns 1850 RPM, I doubt the Subaru engine will have much power or torque at that RPM. Also, doing this would utterly destroy most of the value of the crawler, and in the long run, I don't think it would be much cheaper than overhauling the engine you have.

I think it would be hard to adapt the engine to the JD. Unless you are a machinest then all it will take is time. one other thought is that the JD engine has alot of low rpm power and alot of torque where the replacement engine your thinking about useing is a high speed to get the power you would have to run the engine alot faster than the original engine

Hi, JD. Do you want to end up with a workable loader or an overgrown slot car racer? The two engines are totally different. The Subaru engine won't start to develop any real power until it is revving at around 1 1/2 times what the JD engine does flat out. At those speeds, you would have a helluva time keeping up with your little toy --- even assuming you took the time to overcome all the engineering problems like bell housing adaptors, clutches and drive splines, engine mounts, controls, coolant connections, etc.. I've done a few re-powers, including 3 fairly wild ones. You do need to do your homework to make sure what you are planning is practical and workable. I doubt this one is. Repair the JD. Or get a motor more like the JD in its characteristics. Something with low speed grunt. What you are thinking about is like sending a thoroughbred horse out to pull a heavy plow all day instead of using a Clydesdale. Hope this helps. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
