I have a JD 510D backhoe that the hydraulics stopped working on. The fluid level is good and I changed the 3 cartrige filters underneath. What should I try next? I think the pump is turning because the hoe will move a little but it is slow. The loader wont move at all and I dont have any sterring. Is there a pickup skreen I can clean? What about the stroke control valve?

Almost every hydraulic system I have seen which quit working suddenly has been a case of a suction line to the pump sucking shut. It seems like it is usually the inside separating and shutting off the flow even though the outside still looks just fine. I always try to use as much hard line as I can for suction and go with the largest lines I conveniently can to minimize the vacuum on the lines. This may not apply to your machine, but it might be something to check.

Most Deere equip I've worked on (& other systems),have a charge pump that feeds the main (front pump). If the charge circuit isn't right the main should sound like its starving & your symptoms. If the main pump is out ,the charge pump is running everything &it can't.Check the drive coupler & spline anyway (easy stuff first). Not having a 510 manual,I may be all wet anyway. Good luck let us know.

I would check to make sure I had the right filters. The direction of the oil flow may not be the same on a different numbered filter even though it fits the filter mount and does not leak. If the direction of flow is different you will get a small amount of movement, but not enough to work the system properly.

Did this problem start after you changed the filters and the oil? Make sure the relief valve is still present in the fitting near the loader hydraulic filter. The fitting looks like a drain plug on the line near this filter. If the relief valve is missing the hydraulics will be slow. The fitting looks like an easy place to drain the hydraulics.

Not being an expert on the JD hoes, I can't say for sure what the problem may be. But, being a heavy equipment mechanic and going on prior experience, if it were mine this is what I'd check. If you didn't find any metal or signs of it in any of the filters it's a pretty good but not definite sign that nothing has "blown up". If the problem happened suddenly, and if your sure the pump is working the next thing I'd check is the main pressure relief vlv. With the weather getting cooler it could have popped in the morning when it was started up cold and stuck open dumping the pressure off. Things like the hoe that are light in weight but have large cylinders operating them may be able to move with the low pressure, but like your describing they're not gonna move fast or have any power. Beyone that, I'd be afraid to even speculate without seeing it. Hope this helps, and good luck finding the problem. Wayne

Andy, it maybe the stroke control valve in the large pump up front. I used to own that had a T screw, to turn off the pump and take the load off the starter.
