I got Lavoy's advice on my crawler that was making a sound from the right final area. I was taking it in to the shop when something broke. It also would kick back the right lever as it was traveling forward as well as when it was turning right. Almost as if the brake was binding or acting up. I had cleaned up both clutch housings and repaired the brakes less than 50 hours ago. I tried to walk it across the ranch to the river where I could get a trailer close and before I got there the crawler started to bind up on the right, as if it locked up.It freed up when I reversed a few feet, and then it had a terrible grinding sound when engaging THE LEFT lever in order to turn left. The right lever stops the right track and turns right. No left turn, just a sound like a gears or clutches grinding and slipping. It wouldn't even climb on the trailer the right tracks slipped so bad ( no power at all). I pushed it up with another JD. QUESTION?? Is it more likely something in the clutch pack that has come apart, or possibly the bull gear and main drive shaft? There was also some smoke coming out of the access hole for adjusting the clutch ( just a wisp from heat ? )I hate it but I guess I will have to tear the back end off again, and this time I will try some of those stainless disks lavoy talked about. The 831 Loader is a real pain to work around. Rick in west texas

Rick, I wonder if something let loose on the brake band and it is binding in there real bad. One other thing I have seen, is when you reinstall the final, sometimes the brake band will jump up on the ledge in the track clutch housing that is supposed to hold it out and in place. When this happens, they will really chew up the brake band, and eventually cut it in two. Lavoy

I have same machine Small amout of smoke dust when clutch is hot may be normal, mine does it but usually after using all day , then i take cover off the adjustment housing, but VERY little smoke. you may have broke the bull or pinion gear, take the bull cover off the bottom ( 6, 1/2"bolts) i think, look for bits and chunks. Try backing off the brakes first though. Oh are the tracks and sprockets worn really bad, mine did similar things when they got bad, popped and clacked and carried on. hope it helps mike
