is this engine, turbo and fuel pump originaly out of this dozer or is it from a diffrent application. The fuel system/governor are set up diffrent on some applications. See us at www.gearsinc.net thanks Rex

Bob, This machine is a direct drive,so I have been testing it by working it , it just doesn't have near the grunt it should have compared to the old motor that is rated at same horsepower and was using 5 lires oil a day. Matt

Well Matt, that rules out the torque converter,They can bog an engine down if the stater breaks loose. You are definatle getting enough fuel, with the black smoke and your boost is only about 60% of spec. When you have the intake opened up give the turbo a spin by hand and make sure it's turning free if you don't find any obstructions in the intake. Later Bob

Matt, when you say it doesn't pull well are you working it or just stalling the torque converter? If you do stall the torque converter does it seem to fall to half the speed of high idle? If you don't have a tach you will only be guessing but it would be good to know. Later Bob

Thanks for the help. This motor does not have the aironoid. Have checked the air intake side of things and is fine.the only thing I havn't pulled off is the inlet manifold to see if there is any restriction where it goes onto the head. I found out the boost pressure eshould be between 13 and 17 psi. I appreciate all the input and am open to any suggestions Matt

Air cleaner is a good place to start, but look at exhaust also. Clogged muffer will have same effect

I know that you said that the pump was just averhauled but did they check the airnoid valve on it? If the valve is not working will put too much fuel in and blow smoke till rpms get up - will be slow to pick up rpm's.

Check the secondary air filter that machine should have two filters. That one gets over looked because it doesnt look dirty.Danny

When Deas brought up the clogged intake It reminded me of my first big operators job without working with dad. I was running a TD15 Dresser and Had put a new filter on it inner and outer. ran it a day and had to go run the excaator a while loading trucks. Mean while a laborer got on the Dresser and tried to knock som trees over but bent my stack on a limb. They had straightned it kinda. THe necxt day I found out about it and later that day it started to get sluggish. I took the filters off and it was clogged with soot. When they hit the limb with the stack it had knocked loose the expansion gasket on the turbo.

Hey Taylor, If that tractor had an aspirator pipe on the cyclone tube precleaner it can back feed too. It has the dirt ejector tube located in a venturi in the stack, if it's not positioned right it will blow exh back instead of vacume dirt out. That will melt the tubed in the precleaner and smoke up the air cleaners too. Later Bob

Thanks Bob Ill keep that in mind for the next time. Im slowly learning to mechanic on all the different systems. I dont like to let employers find out i can do more than change hoses. Usually get stuck with more headaches. I did all the maintenance for Huffman of Poplar Bluff Mo. When they did a job in Alabama. I ran the TD15 and a crane then had to change hoses and other jobs, mostly what i didnt know i learned.

Taylor, you can check the aspirator pipe is working right by holding your hand over the end that goes to the precleaner and running the engine at high idle. It should draw on your hand like a vacume cleaner. Later Bob

Turbo boost should under load, in excess of 30 psi. Like Deas says, check for airflow restriction.

Noah, I think 30Psi. is a bit high, seem to remember 15 PSI from doing PDI's on them 24 yrs ago. Most turbo's give you about 1 atmosphere of boost, 15 Psi.,30"Hg.,or 100Kpa. But there migth still be a piece of rag laying on the inter cooler core. Later Bob

Hi, Matt. I'm no expert but it sure sounds like it's not getting enough air to burn the fuel. You might laugh at this but it is NOT unheard of that some-one has left a piece of rag in the air intake somewhere. Also check the air cleaner to see that it is not choked. I don't know what the turbo boost figure should be. Hope this helps. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
