I've got a couple of problems with this machine. Firstly the steering, its impossible to steer as the steering wheel is turned there isn't any resistance its loose and then the steering goes heavy, very tight and then back to being very loose again. The front wheels hardly turn. Secondly the brakes don't work, we've looked at the pads and there seems to be plenty of life left on them and we've adjusted them up but still nothing. Is there anything else we can do? Does anyone know where we can get a second hand workshop manual?

I have a JCB 3C 1550, i don't know how similar mine is to yours, but ill give you a little info. first, the steering system has it's own hydraulic pump, but shares oil with the main hydraulic system. at the pump there are quick connect fittings for measuring the pressure. if you don't have a quick connect, you could probably remove the quick connects and screw a gauge in. on my machine, the brake pads are not visible. they are wet brakes inside the axles. are you looking at the emergency/parking brake? one of my master cyclinders seized and had to be replaced. also, you are supposed to use hydraulic oil in the brake system (at least on my machine) not brake fluid.
