Can anyone tell me the strength of the final drives in 21s in comparison to other dozers and if any, their faults. I am looking at using them to pull a 12' cutter bar from the rippers to the depth of about a foot.

I concurr with Halftrack on his points. The HD21 was orginally the HD20 with the Detroit motor in the machine. In its day it was one of the largest machines of its type.

Can it pull a shank 12" yes but as noted, the condition of the machine will have a lot to do with it. Factors such as condition of the rails, how good the pads and what type of pads and condition of the transmission and finals will all play a role in how well the machine will work. Also a factor that plays a role in anything is what type of soil are you working in and what growth will you have to cut through.

When making a deep cut, that places a lot of stress on any machine CAT IH AC. Do not care who made the machine. So it is better to make two shallow passes each one deeper to get the cut then it is to put the wear and tear on the machine. It will take less time and you will have more control over the machine. Do not forget that as you rip deep you have a big tiller out back and that will direct you and you will have to work harder. You want to go one direction and the ground takes you in another. Also with a rip it is better to rip continiously than to have to stop pull up and then go again and dig deeper ect.

Hope that helps

Let her RIP; I would take 3 passes to get down to the one foot level, unless the area was mostly sand or a loose pit run gravel. Save the machine
for other projects. Unless your in a rush to inspect broken final's or other damaged components in the rig. Beast on.

Jamie: You ask about strength of f/d's, if one better than other. Odds are you could get a million remarks on this.
The bottom line is they "ALL" have strong & weak points. A/C's tractors cost less to buy & CAT's tractors cost more to buy. Parts are going to be easier to get & buy for the CAT over the AC. But regardless of what brand you buy, just make sure to the best of your ability that the f/d's are in good shape. Oil appears clean & bearings are ajusted right. But also check the rest of the machine out as well. Good Luck HT
