I took down a bunch of large trees with a 550JD that I owned, by climbing up about 25ft tying a chain then added 4- 21ft(large) chains (to get far enough away so the tree would not fall on me) and have leverage to pull them over during wet weather, still took some whiplashing seesawing action to loosen up the roots and prevent breaking the chains. When I saw them falling I gave it the gun and got farther away. May not work well in dry conditions as the tree would break off before it would pull over. Other wise a 550JD will barely shake a big tree. I was trying to move off some of the stumps when two boys came up and said they could pull them away with their big bear ATV, so I told them I would pay $2,000.00 for the job. They were so happy and were already discussing how they would split the funds as they went for the 4 wheeler, then the big bear got hung up and bogged in a stump hole in very red mud. They still believe, they could have pulled them away, if they had been able to get close enough with their ATV. to hook up.

I cant believe the atv got stuck in the mud, I assume it was 4wd. Perhaps, they are very bad drivers. I havent been able to get mine stuck ever, snow or mud. As for pulling, I think 1000 lbs is about max, maybe a bit more depending on the model. Big stumps with roots/dirt are quite a bit heavier. $2k to move a few stumps, I would have been all over that too :) -Greg

Alvin I know the feeling. I was digging out a concrete drive for a customer and he insisted he take his ATV and drag the chunks out of the way. I have a thumb on my old 3550 Ford and he couldnt under stand that i used the bigger chunks to break some of the slab with. most of the time he d sit there and spin. He made a 5hour dig out turn into a 12 hour job. I also have a neighbor thats like that. He laughed at my Yanmar for having less Horse power than his ATV but i drug his tav all around the shop backwards.
