I have an older ford backhoe with diesel engine. My question is while useing backhoe i stalled motor to point it quit running . trying to restart engine but motor wont turn iv'e rebuilt starter new switch and all so its not in starter. is there anyway that the hydrolic pump can be in a bind and not allowing motor to turn and if so what is the soloution to my prob.motor seems to be locked. thanks for any advice.

I had a similar problem with a Ford 3550 several years ago, only the engine didn't stall. The pump shaft broke and the drive shaft tore the bottom out of the radiator. Remove the four 7/16" bolts to disconnect the driveshaft from the crankshaft pulley and see if the engine will turn. If it will, you either have a damaged pump or a blockage in the hydraulic system. You can also loosen the pressure line from the pump to release the pressure if that's the case. On ours, we had just re-installed the hoe after years of using it as a loader tractor, the lines going to the backhoe valve were reversed, causing the relief valve to be on the wrong side of the valve. As soon as a cylinder reached the end of stroke, the oil had nowhere to go and the pump locked. Hope this helps!

I predict you will like that 4500 and sell the orphan.

Taylor, are you in MS somewhere? I'm down at McComb. Our 3550 was rescued from a chemical plant in LA, it's in pretty poor condition, but makes a great farm backhoe. I didn't mention in my earlier post that it took two pumps and radiators to figure out the problem... We replaced the original pump with one a little larger and it has far more power than it can handle now, it requires some finesse to dig effeciently with it.

Im in Iuka MS . Mine is in fair shape. Only one break in the rear boom and its from the previous owner. I built a grapple thumb for mine and a set of forks. Im now working on a root rake for the hoe. Im making a few bushings to rebush it to.

You can take a socket 1-1/4 I think, a short extention, and a pull handle, or rachet, 1/2 or 3/4 drive. put it on the nut at the front end of the crankshaft and you should be able to turn the motor over fairly easy. You most likely would have heard some unusual noise, if the motor was locking. I owned a JD that gave a problem and had to install a destroke valve cut off on top of the hyd. pump or the starter would drag and not turn fast enough to start, but it would still turn even though the pump was engaged.

thank's for the input but this one is not draging it wont turn motor over at all. can pump be in a bind enough to not allow motor to spin at all
