JD 450B Questions

I've been looking at a 450B crawler with a 4n1 bucket. I'm planning on clearing part of a 10 ac lot I will be buying soon. Not a lot of big trees, mostly smaller stuff. Also plan on doing some landscaping with it (perhaps putting in a small pond). My first question is: Is the 450 up to it? I don't mind not being able to knock down bigger trees without having to dig around the base first. The second question is: There appears to be a problem with the steering clutch on the right track on this machine. The current owner acknowledged that he simply made left turns for awhile and eventually it started working again. Now that it has sat a few months it does not work. Is this likely a steering clutch? and how hard is it to replace (or how much to have it repaired)? Thanks! John

Being a old J.D mechanic I would tell you to stay away from a 450 or 450-B. As the dry clutches were always a problem. Go to a 450-C or newer as they had the wet clutches and held up 90% better.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm an okay wrench when it comes to tractors, cars, motorcycles etc. but I've not had much experience with the heavier stuff. John

Yes sir, you have found the biggest drawback on a dry steering clutch machine, after periods of non-use the clutches rust and stick together, sometimes they will break loose again and sometimes not, I would say $1800-$2500 for both sides depending on what parts has to be replaced, the 450 is a decent size machine and should do what you ask.
