JCB 3C Mk 2 with Torque Drive, stuck in Reverse

I have a JCB 3C Mark 2 which has a torque convertor. It will not go forward. It will go in reverse when the lever is in the neutral or reverse position, when in the forward position it stalls. I have removed the manually operated solenoid valve, but everything looks alright. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Many thanks.

That sounds like the reverse clutch pack has a broken disc and part of it is jammed between the other reverse discs causing the reverse clutch to remain engaged, then when you select forward the engine will stall, don't keep trying or you will do damage, you will have have the clutch pack out,JCB made 3 types of the MK2,one manual, one that was known as TC and the next was a Powertrain, the TC had the gear shift lever in the middle of the floor, the Powertrain was more forward and to the right, there is a big difference between the two. Thanks AJ, It sounds like mine is a TC type. Is there an easy way of removing the Clutch Pack or will I have to split the JCB.

Hi Rob you have to split it,its at least 23 years since I had anything to do with one and that was a gearbox repair,it is not too hard to split, take out the floor and have a look at the setup, see where the forward reverse goes into the shuttle box and thats where the clutch packs are, take off the back wheels,if you have some sort of four wheel trolley and are on smooth ground it will make the job easy, lower the machine down on the jacks so the trolley will be just starting to take the weight of the transmission assembly, remove the bolts that hold the axle to the frame, disconnect the brakes, remove the bolts behind the shuttle box, push the unit back so it is clear of the shuttle box, start the engine and lift the machine up so it is level, block it up securley, drain the oil from the shuttle box, mark any pipes going on to te box clearly as they will have to go back in the correct place, disconnect the linkage and remove the box, inside the box there is two drums each containing a clutch pack, usuall the front one is for forward and the back for reverse but I would strip both.renew any oil seals as well.It is testing my memory to beyond its limit as I am repairing all sorts of machines full time and cannot remember the details of one off jobs, but if I could see the machine one glance and everything comes back, that machine would be at least 25 years old with the Leyland engine(BMC)built on the Nuffield tractor you should try to get a manual for it,I would take the machine number to a JCB dealer and see what parts they can supply, what part of the world are you located,I'm in London UK AJ

Thanks again AJ, I am in Ireland 30 miles north of Dublin. Just one last question, the digger is in a field at the moment, would I cause damage if I were to move it in reverse. I would like to get it into a yard to make it easier to work on. Thanks Rob.

You'll be ok to do that, just don't put it into forward any more. AJ
