The axle seals on my JD 420c are leaking and I am thinking about replacing them. I checked the service manual and it shows a special tool is needed to install the seal due to the triple sealing lip arrangement. Has anybody had any luck installing these without the special tool. Or does anybody know where I can buy or borrow the tool from (JD part AM2774t).

Thanks,

Mike

I found that this seal can not be purchased through national due to an OEM agreement with JD, so you have to pay through the nose at JD or I have gotten the seal National replaces it with, but you have to buy two per side.
place the first with seal lip outward to keep junk out, the place second on top of that seal backwards with lip inwards to keep oil in, both seals will fit in quill just like original and these four seals are cheeper and easer to instal then the twin triple configuration JD offers, have operated on this seal for a month now every day up to 11hrs a day with good results.
I can look up and suply seal number if any body wants it.

i replaced both of the seals on my final drive assemblies on my 440 w/o any special tool as well. also timed the distributer w/o the special tool. makes me think that the special tools aren't all that special and can be overcome by a little intuition.

Mike,
I have installed more than I can remember without the tool and have not yet had a problem. Make sure to pack the 3 lips of the seal with grease before you install the axle, and just carefully slide the axle in. Main thing to look for is that you haven't folded the lips inward with the end of the axle.
