Need D3 Value

1978 D3; fairly recent engine overhaul; 6-way; rops; looks like it has not been abused. In viewing the ads, prices for D3 and D3B are all over the map. In machinery this old, what are the factors that influence value? Also what is the difference between D3 and D3B (other than D3B seems to be a newer model)? Also I heard something about two engine sizes used (3204 and ?) and that one was better, less problems, etc. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Alot of the value in these machines is undercarriage condition. If the undercarriage is worn out you are looking at around $3000 to replace everything. You also have to look at final drives, track frames for bends or cracks, and the machines frame for cracks and repairs. These small machines take alot of abuse often doing the work that should be left to larger machines. The straight d-3 is a dry brake machine, while the B series is wet brake. The clutches and brakes run in oil, giving you longer clutch and brake life, and somewhat smoother operation over the dry brake machines.Another thing to remember is that nothing on these machines is a cheap fix,a final drive repair, transmission,or torque converter repair can easily get to be several thousand dollars.

I own a 1982 D-3B.It does not have oil or wet type steering/clutch assemblies. On any D-3 with a 3204 engine watch for excessive blue smoke from the exhaust when the engine is at operating temp. This engine is only a 2 ring piston engine, and usually burns oil at a high hour meter reading.I rebuilt my '82 engine with aftermarket 3 ring pistons in 1996.I am the second owner and my '82 is in good condition, and it's worth 22,000 Canadian dollars.
