I have a Dynahoe 190 which has been running well up until last week. I am having trouble keeping it running. Sometimes it will run strong for a minute or two and other times it will bog down like it has no power. Does this sound like a dirty fuel filter. It has a Detroit Diesel engine so I was told by the previous owner but I don't know what model. Did they all have the same engine? How can I tell what engine it is?

Vince in reference to your dynahoe the engine you have is a detroit (353). I have owned dynahoes for 20 years and I still have two 190's. If you have the original fuel filter canisters sometimes the lip under the housing cracks, it will suck air and not run properly. You need to remove the fuel filter canister and inspect the housing lip to see if it is cracked or out of line. If there is anything else I can help you with, email me at LR1siny@aol.com Billy

I have a problem with brakes on my dynahoe 160, 1978 It seems that that the master cylinder doesn't suck the fluid from the reservuar. Once I empty it by bleeding brakes, it stays empty. ( the pedal goes to the floor, and the cylinder doesn't fill up with brake fluid again.) I took apart the cylinder, and it looks fine, nothing clogged, or cracked. Can you guys tell me where I can get a new one?

Vince, I own 3 Dynahoe Backhoes with GM Diesels, all the 190's have 3-53 engines. Your problrm sounds like one of the following: 1) Fuel Filters, they have a primary and a secondary, change them if they are the can type, spend the money for the conversion kit and make them spin on type. 2) An air leak in the suction hose from the tank, if it is hard to start, it seems to be our of fuel, try this. 3) A piece of somthing in the 90 bend where the fuel suction line attaches to the primary filter housing. This kept me busy all day until I found a small piece of wood chip in there, came from a dirty funnel. Try this before you start replacing parts or adjusting the rack. Any problems drop me an e-mail. Good Luck, Bob

I had this problem in a JD 450. In the diesel tank there is always a little water. A black scum grows in the area where diesel meets water & clogs fuel line. Take the line off where it goes into the fuel pump & look for black gunk. If that's it, blow out line, drain fuel tank, flush, etc. everything. Otherwise this problem will re-occur on an intermitant basis & drive you nuts. It doesnt show up in the filters because it blocks the lines before it gets there.

Vince: I don't have an answer for you, just a question. I bought a 190, and am trying to get it hauled. I need dimensions on it for the shipper to estimate and schedule, and I'm far far away now. Any chance you know the standing height and length, hoe folded/ready to ship? I've got the weight at 19,500, but that is all the info I have. I'd be seriously appreciative if you have this info in a manual or could get them off your hoe. Mike (Mikerkba@aol.com)

Hey Vince, if your unsurer about the filters change them to eliminate the first thing that could be causing the problem before you do anything else. If you have a Detroit 53 or 71 series engine it will have a blower on one side that looks basically like what you'd see on a drag car. If you look on the side of the block toward the front and right under the head there should be a flat spot with a series of numbers on it. Depending on how many cylinders it has if it's a 71 series it should start with a 3A, 4A, etc. If it's a 53 series it will start with 3D, 4D, etc. As for your problem it sounds to me like you may have an injector starting to stick sometimes. If that's the case it will only get worse. No matter wether it's a 53 or a 71 series Detroit the injectors are basically the same, they are all connected to a common rack. When one sticks, in whatever position, the others are all held in the same position. If you have one that is sticking sometimes then that would be the problem. You should be able to pull the valve cover and work the rack by hand and see if that is in fact the problem. If it showes up like one is sticking then you'll have to actually take the rack loose and operate them individually to determine which one it is. If you have to pull the rack you'll also need to know how to put it back and insure everything is set right, so I wouldn't suggest this unless your 100% sure of what your doing. If that does turn out to be the problem I'd go ahead and change all of them if they haven't been changed in a while. Not doing them all will tend to make the cylinder with the new injector stronger than the others and more prone to failure because it's trying to take more than it's fair share of the load. Good luck I hope it's something simple like the filters. Injectors are about $150 apiece so that's an expensive fix no matter how many cylinders you have.

Most 190s show a Detroit 3-53. One of the later models showed a 4-53. Have not work on a detroit. Symptoms seem that you have a air leak on a fuel line hose between tank and pump.
